Renovations underway, iconic Coney Island to reopen in July

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Sundowner and chili dog lovers in Johnstown will soon have their Coney Island cravings satisfied. The iconic Johnstown restaurant is nearing its reopening.

It's been 11 months since Coney Island closed following the retirement of owner Sam Contacos, bringing an end to the 101-year family legacy.

But earlier this month, Coney Island lovers rejoiced as Randy Clark and his family, the owners of Miller Clothing downtown, purchased the business.

Since the announcement, work has been underway, and the excitement has been mounting.

“I remember when I put out the first Facebook post up about that we had bought it,” said Taylor Clark, Randy’s son and the new secretary and treasurer of Coney Island. “It reached over 148,000 people in the time of about five hours."

Crews have been repainting the wall, sprucing up the booths, replacing ceiling tiles and ordering food as the countdown continues.

"As you can see, just getting ready to paint. That will probably be done by Sunday,” Clark said. “Then after that, state inspection. That's it. We hope to open July 9th, 10th, 11th -- something like that."

Food certifications for the owners and employees are being processed so that everything will be in place for the much-anticipated reopening.

"The buzz around town is great. The support we've gotten from everyone is fantastic,” Taylor said. “I just can't wait to get it up and open and bring a staple back to Johnstown, one that I remember and love and so many others do as well."

For those wondering, Randy Clark tells 6 News that former owner, Sam Contacos, will oversee the first batches of the famed Coney Island chili sauce.
