LIGONIER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WJAC) — Police say a Boswell man was driving under the influence when his vehicle hit and killed a bicyclist in Westmoreland County in 2019.
The Ligonier Valley Police Department have filed charges against 42-year-old Adam Ulrich related to the fatal crash that happened the morning of Oct. 1, 2019.
Ulrich faces charges related to homicide by vehicle while DUI, according to a criminal complaint.
Police say they were called to Route 30 a little after 9 a.m. after 38-year-old Jason Zollinger had been hit and killed by a vehicle while he was riding his bike.
Police say Ulrich returned to the crash scene and told officers he thought he had hit a deer.
Police noted that the windshield of Ulrich’s vehicle was smashed, and the passenger side headlight was broken.
According to the complaint, Ulrich told investigators he had gone to the methadone clinic and was on his way to work traveling on Route 30 when he hit Zollinger.
When Ulrich turned around, he said he saw Zollinger on the ground and a woman who had called 911, according to the complaint.
Ulrich spoke to 911 who told him to provide treatment to Zollinger, police say.
Police say Ulrich began to fall asleep as he recounted the crash to officers.
He told them he had taken Klonopin and Xanax and agreed to have his blood drawn, according to the criminal complaint.
A crash reconstruction investigator concluded that Ulrich should have had enough time to see Zollinger and avoid hitting him, the complaint says.
Police say they received the results of Ulrich’s blood draw Oct. 17 and they showed the presence of Xanax, Klonopin and Methadone which would have impaired his driving.
Ulrich has a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 11.
He’s free on unsecured bail.
